Identifying features

  • Green-gold back and silvery sides sprinkled with golden-yellow spots
  • No scales on the pectoral fin area and a lateral line that slopes gently, without a sharp dip
  • Streamlined mackerel body with a mouthful of triangular, razor teeth
  • Usually 1-3 lb โ€” a snack-sized mackerel next to its king cousin
  • Look-alike: king mackerel are larger, plain grey as adults, with a sharp dip in the lateral line

Habits

  • Hunts in fast schools that slash through bait along beaches, passes and nearshore reefs
  • Migrates north in spring and south in fall, following warm water and bait
  • Feeds aggressively in bright sun and choppy water around tide changes
  • Often betrays itself by leaping and by the birds working over the school

Where to find them

  • Beaches, piers and jetties during the spring and fall runs
  • Pass mouths and tidal rips where bait stacks up
  • Nearshore reefs and live-bottom in 20-50 ft along the Gulf coast
  • Behind working shrimp boats in the Gulf, picking off the bycatch cloud

How to catch them

Trolling Clark spoons

Rig: Light trolling outfit, #1 planer or trolling sinker, long mono leader

Bait/lure: Small Clark spoons in silver and gold

Key tip: Use a long, light leader โ€” mackerel are leader-shy and razor-toothed in equal measure.

Casting Gotcha plugs from piers

Rig: 7' spinning outfit, 15 lb line, short wire or heavy mono trace

Bait/lure: Gotcha plugs, spoons and small jigs worked fast

Key tip: Retrieve fast with sharp jerks; slow baits get inspected and refused.
