Identifying features

  • Vivid vermilion-red all over, with faint yellow streaks running along the scale rows below the lateral line
  • Much smaller and slimmer than red snapper, with a shorter snout and a smaller mouth
  • Tail fin is forked with red edges; the lower jaw projects slightly
  • No dark spot anywhere on the body; eyes are large and red
  • Look-alike: red snapper are deep-bodied bruisers to 30+ lb with a sloped forehead; vermilion rarely pass 5 lb

Habits

  • Schools in mid-water over reefs, ledges and wrecks in 80-300 ft โ€” often above the red snapper
  • Feeds on small fish, shrimp and squid; a quick, peckish biter on small baits
  • Party-boat staple of the northern Gulf, where anglers fill stringers over deep structure
  • Most active in daylight, the opposite of many other snappers

How to catch them

Chicken-rig bottom fishing

Rig: Two-hook chicken rig, 8-12 oz sinker, small circle hooks

Bait/lure: Thumbnail-size squid or sardine chunks

Key tip: Small baits, small hooks โ€” vermilion peck at big offerings and miss.

Fishing the school's level

Rig: Light jig or bait rig stopped partway down, fished off the bottom

Bait/lure: Squid strips, small jigs

Key tip: If the sounder shows fish 20 ft up, fish 20 ft up โ€” the school rarely drops to the bottom.
