Identifying features

  • Soft, unspotted body โ€” NO black spots, unlike its cousin the spotted seatrout
  • Olive-green back with iridescent bronze, gold and lavender reflections; dark speckling forms faint diagonal rows on the upper sides
  • Two large canine teeth at the tip of the upper jaw
  • Flesh and mouth membranes are soft and tear easily โ€” the source of the name
  • Look-alike: spotted seatrout carry bold round black spots on body, dorsal fin and tail; weakfish never do

Habits

  • Schools over sand and grass flats and along channel edges, feeding on shrimp and small fish
  • A largely nocturnal feeder โ€” the best weakfishing often happens after dark around lights
  • Big 'tide-runner' fish push into bays and sounds each spring to spawn
  • Gentle biter: the take is a soft tap, and hooks tear out if you strike hard

Where to find them

How to catch them

Soft plastics on jig heads

Rig: 1/4-1/2 oz jig head with a 4" shad or shrimp tail, light spinning tackle

Bait/lure: Soft plastics in white, pink or opening-night colours

Key tip: Lift gently into the bite โ€” a soft mouth means a hard strike tears the hook free.

Night fishing around lights

Rig: Free-lined shrimp or a small plug worked through the light line

Bait/lure: Live shrimp; small swimming plugs

Key tip: Weakfish hang at the edge of the light where shadow meets glare โ€” cast across that seam.
