Belize Fisheries Department
Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source — we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences — what you need
- • A sport fishing licence from the Fisheries Department is required for recreational fishing, including on the flats; licences are sold for short visitor periods as well as annually.
- • Bonefish, permit and tarpon are protected as catch-and-release only species — they may never be kept, bought or sold.
How the rules are organized
- • National fisheries law covers the whole coast and cayes; a network of marine reserves (Hol Chan, Turneffe and others) adds zone rules — some areas are fully no-take.
- • Your licence does not override reserve zoning: guides licensed for the reserves know which zones allow fishing.
Good to know — common mistakes
- • Flats fishing is almost entirely guided: a licensed guide is both the practical and, in reserves, the expected way to fish.
- • Snook, snapper and grouper have their own seasons and limits under national rules — ask your guide for the current numbers before keeping fish.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change — including in-season by official notice — and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.
AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins — and please tell us so we can fix it.
