Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source β we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences β what you need
- β’ Most adult anglers need the national fishing licence (fisketegn) for both fresh and salt water β it is bought online in minutes and different versions cover a short visit or a full year.
- β’ The fisketegn is a state licence only: on private fresh waters it does not replace the owner's or association's permission, which must be arranged separately.
- β’ Put-and-take fisheries and many association streams sell their own day tickets on top of, not instead of, the state licence where one is required.
How the rules are organized
- β’ The Danish Fisheries Agency runs the national licence and the national framework rules for both coastal and freshwater fishing.
- β’ Over that framework sit local layers β sea-trout streams are managed through associations with their own rules, and areas such as the Wadden Sea carry extra restrictions and protected zones.
Good to know β common mistakes
- β’ Holding a fisketegn but fishing a private stream without the association's permission is the most common Danish mistake β you need both documents, from two different places.
- β’ Protected zones and local restrictions apply in parts of the Wadden Sea and around stream mouths, so check the map for the exact stretch of coast before fishing it.
- β’ Because the licence is bought online in minutes, there is no practical excuse window β enforcement expects the fisketegn to be in place before the first cast, not bought after being checked.
