DIGEPESCA — General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SAG)
Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source — we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences — what you need
- • Recreational fishing falls under DIGEPESCA (part of the agriculture secretariat, SAG); charter and dive operations in the Bay Islands arrange local permissions for their clients.
- • The Bay Islands are wrapped in marine protected areas — the Roatán Marine Park and the Cayos Cochinos reserve set their own access and no-take rules on top of national law.
How the rules are organized
- • National fisheries law plus protected-area regulations: expect to follow whichever is stricter where you actually fish.
- • Lionfish are the one reef fish every authority wants removed — divers and anglers are encouraged to spear and keep them.
Good to know — common mistakes
- • On Roatán and Utila, most sport fishing runs through local operators who carry the park paperwork as part of the trip.
- • Bonefish and permit on the flats are fished catch-and-release by strong local custom even where the written rule is thinner.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change — including in-season by official notice — and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.
AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins — and please tell us so we can fix it.
