Hungarian National Angling Association (MOHOSZ)

Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source β€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences β€” what you need

  • β€’ The state licence is obtained by passing the state angling exam β€” it qualifies you to fish, but by itself it opens no water.
  • β€’ Every water then needs its own area permit, and most area permits are sold through MOHOSZ's online system at horgaszjegy.hu, tied to the specific water you choose.
  • β€’ Visitor and short-stay arrangements run through the same state-licence-plus-area-permit structure, handled through the MOHOSZ system and local associations.

How the rules are organized

  • β€’ MOHOSZ and its member associations administer most Hungarian fishing, with the online permit system acting as the central shop for area permits across the country.
  • β€’ The flagship waters have dedicated permits and rulebooks of their own β€” Lake Balaton and the big rivers such as the Danube and Tisza are managed as distinct fisheries within the national system.

Good to know β€” common mistakes

  • β€’ Buying the state licence and heading straight to the bank is the standard beginner error in Hungary β€” the area permit for that exact water is the document that matters on the day.
  • β€’ A Lake Balaton permit is its own arrangement: do not assume a general or river area permit covers Balaton, or that a Balaton permit covers the rivers flowing into it.
  • β€’ Area permits are water-specific even within the same association's territory, so a multi-water trip usually means checking and buying for each water in the system before you travel.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change β€” including in-season by official notice β€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.
