Inland Fisheries Ireland

Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source β€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences β€” what you need

  • β€’ Coarse and pike fishing mostly needs only the fishery owner's permission β€” a large amount of it is free public fishing, with permits applying on specific managed fisheries.
  • β€’ Salmon and sea trout are the exception: they require a state salmon licence, and the licence works with a tagging and recording system for fish that are kept.
  • β€’ Sea angling is largely licence-free, although local byelaws, charter-boat arrangements and individual fishery rules still apply.

How the rules are organized

  • β€’ Inland Fisheries Ireland sets and enforces national byelaws, while individual fisheries, districts and owners add their own permits and local conditions.
  • β€’ Salmon rivers and lakes are managed fishery by fishery, with their conservation status reviewed regularly β€” a river open one year can be restricted or catch-and-release another year.

Good to know β€” common mistakes

  • β€’ A state salmon licence does not replace the individual fishery's own permit or booking β€” on managed salmon waters you generally need both.
  • β€’ Do not assume a salmon river is open for keeping fish because it was on a previous visit: check the current status of that specific river with Inland Fisheries Ireland.
  • β€’ Pike and coarse anglers often need no state licence, but club waters and managed fisheries can still require their own permit or day ticket.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change β€” including in-season by official notice β€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins β€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
