Netherlands

Sportvisserij Nederland (national angling federation issuing the VISpas)

Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source β€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences β€” what you need

  • β€’ The VISpas is the central document: it is both your fishing licence and your proof of membership of the affiliated angling association, and it covers most Dutch waters.
  • β€’ Not every water is included automatically β€” some waters need to be listed for you in the VISplanner app or covered by an additional permission from the local club.
  • β€’ Night fishing and fishing with an extra rod are add-ons, not defaults: they need the separate permissions that go with the VISpas.

How the rules are organized

  • β€’ Sportvisserij Nederland publishes the combined list of waters covered by the VISpas, and the VISplanner app is the practical tool for checking whether a specific water is included and what local conditions apply.
  • β€’ National rules set the framework for protected species and methods, while the association or owner of an individual water can add stricter local conditions.

Good to know β€” common mistakes

  • β€’ Check the VISplanner before fishing a new water β€” assuming a canal or lake is covered just because you hold a VISpas is the most common mistake.
  • β€’ European eel is tightly protected in recreational fisheries and in most cases may not be taken home, even where other species can be kept.
  • β€’ Your VISpas is personal and tied to your membership β€” a fishing companion needs their own, not a shared one.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change β€” including in-season by official notice β€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins β€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
