Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) and the cantons
Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source β we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences β what you need
- β’ The cantons run fishing: freely accessible waters are fished on the cantonal patent, which you buy from the canton whose water you are fishing.
- β’ Anyone fishing patent waters needs the SaNa certificate of competence β the Swiss qualification covering species knowledge and correct handling of fish β unless a specific cantonal exemption applies.
- β’ Waters that are not patent waters are typically leased to clubs and associations, and those waters are fished on the club's own permits, not on the cantonal patent.
How the rules are organized
- β’ Federal law sets the protection framework, but each canton publishes its own fishing ordinance and patent conditions, so rules are organised canton by canton and water by water.
- β’ Cross-border lakes add their own joint rulebooks β Lakes Constance and Geneva are governed by shared arrangements with the neighbouring countries that sit alongside cantonal rules.
Good to know β common mistakes
- β’ A patent from one canton is not a patent for the next: crossing a cantonal boundary on the same trip can mean buying a second patent and fishing under a second rulebook.
- β’ The SaNa requirement surprises foreign anglers most β check well before a trip whether your planned patent fishing requires it and how visitors are handled by that canton.
- β’ Do not assume a beautiful alpine stream is patent water: if it is leased to a club, the cantonal patent does not cover it at any price.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change β including in-season by official notice β and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.
AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins β and please tell us so we can fix it.
