How to catch them

Rock float fishing (iso style) Rock fishing

Rig: Sensitive float rig with groundbait of crumbled krill and bread, fished close to the rocks

Bait/lure: Prawns, mussel meat, small crabs

Key tip: Feed little and often to draw fish up from the reef, and fish lighter than feels brave β€” big kurodai live in the snags.

Ledgering shellfish baits Rock fishing

Rig: Light running lead, small strong hook buried in shellfish meat

Bait/lure: Mussel, oyster, crab pieces

Key tip: Bites are crushing pick-ups; wait for the second, committed pull before striking.

Seawall drop fishing (otoshi-komi) Shore

Rig: Short rod and small crab or shellfish bait lowered straight down the face of a seawall or breakwater

Bait/lure: Small crabs, barnacles, mussel meat

Key tip: Walk the wall slowly and lower the bait through every crack and shadow β€” black seabream graze the wall face itself.
