How to catch them

Surf casting bait rigs Shore

Rig: Medium surf outfit, two-hook pompano/bottom rig with size 1/0-2/0 hooks

Bait/lure: Shrimp or sand crab

Key tip: Fish estuary mouths and surf troughs on a moving tide; this species feeds tight to the bottom, so keep the rig pinned in the wash.

Casting spoons in coastal shallows Boat

Rig: Medium spinning outfit, silver spoon or jig

Bait/lure: Metal spoons and small jigs

Key tip: Work sandy drop-offs at lagoon mouths from a small boat at dawn; retrieve steadily just above the sand.
