Saltwater Β· Year-round in Florida mangroves and canals; most active in warm months
Checkered Puffer
Sphoeroides testudineus
The checkered puffer is a small Florida puffer wrapped in a dark, checkered network pattern, common in mangrove creeks, canals and grass flats. It is mostly a bait-stealing bycatch on shrimp bits β and a hard safety rule applies: puffer flesh can carry potent toxins, so never eat one; unhook it carefully and release it.
