Dace

Leuciscus leuciscus

The dace is a fast-water silver fish of clean rivers, shoaling in the runs below weirs and taking insects with lightning-fast bites. Delicate on the float and fun on fine tackle, it is the classic summer river fish β€” rarely big, but always willing in good water.

How to catch them

Stick-float trotting in river runs River

Rig: Stick float on a 13-14 ft rod, size 16-18 hook, bait trotted down glides and runs with the flow

Bait/lure: Maggot or caster with loose-fed hemp

Key tip: Strike instantly β€” dace bites are the fastest in the river; the float is barely seen before the bait is gone.

Summer surface fishing on riffles River

Rig: Light surface presentation β€” small dry fly on fly tackle or a freelined maggot β€” cast to shoals on shallow riffles

Bait/lure: Small dry fly or a single surface maggot

Key tip: Cast above the shoal and let it drift naturally; dace rise freely on warm evenings.
