Saltwater · Warm peak June-August; scarce or inactive in cold winter

Elongate Ilisha

Ilisha elongata

A slim, bright herring-family fish of the warm months — 준치. The Korean name carries a 'valued fish' pun (준치 is slang for a prized catch), and summer schools sweep into harbours of the south and west coasts where they hit sabiki rigs and small shrimp baits from shore. In winter it retreats to deeper water.

Bait/lure: Tiny sabiki lures (baitfish imitations)

Key tip: When a school moves in, every hook fills — a slow, steady retrieve keeps them interested.

Shore bottom fishing in sandy bays Shore

Rig: Light bottom rig with shrimp pieces cast into sandy bays and worked back slowly

Bait/lure: Small shrimp pieces

Key tip: Fish at dawn when schools patrol the harbour edge; they are fast biters — strike immediately.
