Saltwater Β· Year-round on sand-mud at depth; peaks with tilefish season

Golden Threadfin Bream

Nemipterus virgatus

The main companion catch of tilefish boat fishing in Japan β€” and the same golden threadfin bream well known to anglers in China. Its long tail filament is unmistakable. It is a small, tasty bream taken on the same tenbin rigs as tilefish.

Identifying features

  • Long filament trailing from the upper lobe of the tail β€” the key mark
  • Pinkish body with golden-yellow horizontal stripes
  • Yellow markings on the head and a yellow edge to the tail
  • Slender bream body with a moderately forked tail apart from the filament
  • Smaller and more slender than tilefish taken on the same grounds

Habits

  • Lives over sand and mud and feeds just above the bottom
  • Feeds on shrimp, small crabs, worms and small fish
  • Often the first and most frequent bite on tilefish rigs
  • Schools loosely over flat bottom in southern waters
  • Maximum size is only about 2.2 lb (1 kg), so most fish are small
