Korean Filefish
Thamnaconus modestus
The grey-brown, leather-skinned filefish of Korean harbours and reefs — 말쥐치. The common coastal filefish, prolific at piers and from boats, and one of Korea's most valued table fish: the firm white flesh is served as hoe (sashimi). Its beak mouth strips baits, so small strong hooks are a must.

Boat fishing over mixed ground Boat
Rig: Bottom rig with shrimp on small strong hooks, fished from a boat over reef and sand in 30-80 ft
Bait/lure: Shrimp pieces or sandworm
Key tip: Filefish nibble — compress the bait to a firm wad and strike at the first solid pull.
Pier fishing at harbour walls Rock fishing
Rig: Light bottom rig with clam or shrimp dropped straight down the pier wall
Bait/lure: Clam meat or shrimp
Key tip: Filefish hold tight to structure — fish vertically at the wall with no casting distance.
