How to catch them

Rock lure fishing Rock fishing

Rig: Light rock-game rod, small jig heads and soft plastics worked tight to the reef

Bait/lure: Small soft plastics, micro jigs

Key tip: Work the bait down the reef face at dusk; rockfish lunge from holes and vanish back into them.

Breakwater bait fishing Rock fishing

Rig: Float or light ledger rig dropped beside tetrapods and boulders

Bait/lure: Prawns, sandworms, small crabs

Key tip: Fish vertically into the gaps β€” that is where the fish live.

Boat fishing over reefs Boat

Rig: Boat rod with a down-shot or live-bait rig fished vertically over offshore reefs

Bait/lure: Live shrimp, sandworms or small soft plastics

Key tip: Drop straight onto the reef marks on the sounder; boat rockfish bite best on the first drop before the school scatters.
