Saltwater Β· Summer boat season off Jeju; present year-round on deep reefs

Longtooth Grouper

Epinephelus bruneus

Jeju's legendary deep-reef grouper β€” dageumbari is the fish Korean boat anglers travel for. It holds on reefs 100-300 ft down, guards rock caves, and takes big live baits. In Jeju dialect juveniles are called jabbari. Slow-growing and now scarce; many anglers release big fish, and its protected-season rules deserve respect.

How to catch them

Live-baiting Jeju's deep reefs Boat

Rig: Heavy bottom tackle with a live mackerel on a 5/0-7/0 hook, presented vertically over deep reef in 100-250 ft, boat held on the spot by electric motor

Bait/lure: Live mackerel or sand lance

Key tip: Patience is everything: hold one live bait over a cave for 10-20 minutes; the take is a savage pull β€” strike hard and give no slack.

Summer reef-edge boat fishing Boat

Rig: Medium-heavy tackle with a large live shrimp or baitfish worked along reef edges in 50-100 ft in summer

Bait/lure: Large live shrimp or baitfish

Key tip: In summer fish move shallower; release small fish carefully β€” they need decades to reach trophy size.
