Freshwater · Spring through autumn in streams; breeding colours peak in spring

Pale Chub

Zacco platypus

The pale chub — 溪哥 — is the starter fish of East Asian mountain streams: a small, lively cyprinid that darts at tiny spoons and flies in clear riffles, with breeding males in peach-blossom colours. In Japan the oikawa forms, with dark chub and Japanese dace, the classic trio of stream small-game fish, taken on ultra-light tackle and fly in clean lowland streams.

  • Feeds on drifting insects, small crustaceans and algae in riffles and runs

How to catch them

Stream fly and small spoon drift fishing River

Rig: Ultralight rod or light fly rod, tiny spoons and small flies drifted and swung through riffles

Bait/lure: Tiny spoons, small flies

Key tip: Cast across and let the lure swing in the current; chub slash at it as it turns downstream.

Light float fishing with maggot and dough River

Rig: Fine float rig with size 16-20 hooks, maggots or pea-sized dough trotted through pool heads

Bait/lure: Maggots, dough

Key tip: Feed a few free offerings into the drift and strike quickly — chub take and eject fine baits in a flash.
