Identifying features

  • The most colourful sunfish: orange belly, blue-green wavy cheek lines
  • A bright orange-red crescent on the rear edge of the black ear flap
  • Deep, pumpkinseed-shaped body in olive, gold and turquoise
  • Small mouth; adults commonly 6-9 in
  • Look-alike: bluegill's ear flap is plain black with no orange crescent, and its cheeks lack the wavy blue lines

Habits

  • Builds colonies of saucer nests on sandy shallows in late spring
  • Feeds on snails, insects and tiny crayfish around docks and weed edges
  • Brave and curious — will nip at almost anything small near the nest
  • Perfect first fish: abundant, shallow and always hungry

How to catch them

Float fishing with worms

Rig: Tiny hook (size 8-10), split shot, small float

Bait/lure: Worm pieces, maggots, tiny grubs

Key tip: Fish nest colonies in 2-5 ft in late spring — bites are instant and constant.

Micro jig casting

Rig: Ultralight rod, 1/32 oz jig or micro spinner

Bait/lure: Tiny plastics and spinners

Key tip: Cast past the beds and retrieve slowly; big 'seeds take tiny flies with spirit.
