Saltwater Β· Year-round; best in summer and fall around bait schools
Queenfish
Seriphus politus
A small, deep-bodied California croaker with a strongly forked tail that schools in bays and under pier lights at night. Despite the name, it is not one of the Indo-Pacific queenfishes (Scomberoides) β the Hawaiian 'lai' belongs to that other group; this queenfish is a true croaker of the California coast.
