Identifying features

  • A long, pointed 'ear' flap — the gill-cover extension reaches well past the cover's edge, longer than any other sunfish's
  • Blue-green streaks and turquoise shimmer cover the cheek and gill cover
  • Reddish-orange belly, brightest on breeding males; body olive with rusty flecks
  • Tail and anal fins carry a rusty-red wash
  • Look-alike: bluegill have a short black ear flap and a dark chin; redbreast's ear is long and pointed, with a blue-streaked cheek

Habits

  • The river sunfish: lives in current where bluegill won't, holding behind rocks and in pools
  • Feeds on aquatic insects, snails and small crayfish picked from the rocks
  • Males guard nests in gravelly shallows in late spring and strike anything that intrudes
  • A scrapper far beyond its size — on light tackle it's the stream's pound-for-pound champion

How to catch them

Casting the riffles

Rig: Ultralight spinning gear, small spinner or 1/32 oz jig

Bait/lure: Beetle spins and tiny in-line spinners

Key tip: Cast above the pool and swim the lure past boulders — redbreast ambush from the seams.

Fly fishing the pools

Rig: 3-4 wt fly rod, foam bugs and small poppers

Bait/lure: Small poppers and dry flies at dawn and dusk

Key tip: River redbreast rise eagerly in summer evenings — the most underrated dry-fly panfish in the East.
