Freshwater Β· Late spring and summer; a surface feeder in warm weather

Rudd

Scardinius erythrophthalmus

The rudd is the golden, surface-feeding cousin of the roach with an upturned mouth built for taking flies and seeds from the surface film. In warm weather shoals cruise shallow, weedy bays, and a floating piece of bread on light tackle is the classic summer method.
