Saddled Bream
Oblada melanura
A silvery mid-water shoal bream of Mediterranean rock, easy to pick out by the black, white-edged saddle spot at the base of the tail. The saddled bream is the bread-bait classic, rising to drifting bread and slow-sinking flakes from piers and breakwaters. Sociable, quick and an ideal first float-fishing fish.

Bread-flake drift on breakwaters Rock fishing
Rig: Unweighted or lightly weighted bread flake on a size 10-12 hook, trotted freely down the breakwater face
Bait/lure: Bread flake or dough on a small hook
Key tip: Feed bread crumbs up to lift the shoal and let the flake sink at the same rate as the loose feed.
Float fishing over harbour shadow Shore
Rig: Tiny waggler rig with size 12-14 hooks, set 1-2 m deep, over the shadow edges of piers and harbour walls
Bait/lure: Small bread flakes and tiny shrimp pieces
Key tip: Keep the shoal in place with a steady trickle of crumbs and watch the float tip; do not strike until it slides cleanly under.
