Saltwater Β· Late spring through autumn

Shi Drum

Umbrina cirrosa

A silvery drum of Mediterranean surf and harbour walls that feeds over sand at dusk. Do not confuse it with the brown meagre (Sciaena umbra): that relative is fully protected and must be released β€” in France, spearfishing it has been banned since 2013. In French it is ombrine; in Spanish, corvallo.

How to catch them

Surf casting over sand Shore

Rig: Beachcaster with a running ledger rig and a strong size 1-2/0 hook, cast into the gutters and holes behind the surf line

Bait/lure: Lugworm, crab pieces or razor clam on a running ledger

Key tip: Fish a flooding tide into dusk; the fish ride in with the water and feed in knee-deep water.

Bottom fishing from jetties and boats over sand Boat

Rig: Medium spinning or boat rod with a running lead or paternoster over sand beside harbour walls, jetties and river mouths

Bait/lure: Fresh mussel, crab or worm, presented tight to the structure

Key tip: Place the bait on the seam between structure and sand β€” shi drum patrol exactly that edge at dusk.
