Silver Carp
Hypophthalmichthys molitrix
The silver carp is a leaping, plankton-sifting invader that now crowds the Mississippi basin. In China it is a classic stillwater target taken on suspended baits β and it fights far above its weight.
Seasons Β· Peak

Identifying features
- Deep, strongly compressed silvery body with very fine, small scales
- Large scaleless head with a strongly upturned mouth
- Eyes set unusually low on the head, below the level of the mouth
- Sharp keel running along the belly from throat to vent
- Look-alike: bighead carp has a much bigger head with dark mottling; silver carp is uniformly bright silver with a smaller head
Habits
- A plankton filter feeder β strains algae and zooplankton while swimming slowly with its mouth open
- Famous for leaping metres out of the water when startled by boat noise
- Established and abundant in the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Illinois rivers; a major invasive-species concern for the Great Lakes
- Forms dense schools in the open water of big rivers and reservoirs
Distribution
Where to find them
- The Illinois River and tailwaters below locks and dams
- Backwater lakes and oxbows of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers
- Eddy lines and current seams where plankton concentrates
- Reservoir arms with green, plankton-rich water
Where they live
How to catch them
Suspended bait-cage rig (Chinese style) River
Rig: Float rig suspending a spring bait cage with small hooks around it, fished mid-water
Bait/lure: Sour fermented crumb and flour paste
Key tip: Silver carp feed by filtering β keep the bait cloud rich and fish where you see rolling or jumping fish.
Float fishing paste baits River
Rig: Long rod, fine line, small hook with a pea-sized soft paste ball just under a sensitive float
Bait/lure: Algae-flour paste, fine dough
Key tip: Strike at the smallest dip of the float; the take is a sip, not a pull.
