Saltwater Β· Warm months around Kyushu and the Nansei Islands
Silver-stripe Round Herring
Spratelloides gracilis
Kyushu's representative small fish β in Kagoshima it is everyday food and everyday fishing, while most Honshu anglers rarely meet it. Schools shimmer just under the surface of southern piers, and the single mirror-bright silver stripe along the flank is the instant ID key. In Kagoshima it is eaten very fresh as kibinago sashimi with ginger soy.

How to catch them
Fine sabiki from southern piers Shore
Rig: Ultralight rod with a very fine sabiki rig of tiny hooks, worked just under the surface beside Kagoshima and Nansei piers
Bait/lure: Bare tiny sabiki hooks with a little ami krill chum
Key tip: Keep the rig high in the water β this fish feeds near the surface and rarely drops deep.
Tiny float rig over the school Shore
Rig: Light float rig with one tiny hook under a small float, drifted over the school in calm harbour water
Bait/lure: One ami krill or a pin-head piece of krill
Key tip: Use the finest line and smallest hook you own; standard sabiki hooks are too big for many fish.
