Freshwater · Autumn spawning shoals; winter ice fishing in Finland
Vendace
Coregonus albula
A small pelagic whitefish of deep northern and alpine lakes — in Finland the muikku, a cultural icon that spawns in shoals in autumn, is fished through the ice all winter and whose roe is a festival food. Common in the far north, scarce and warming-sensitive in the south: a fine fish for the finest tackle.

Identifying features
- Small, slim silvery whitefish, usually under 8 in, with a distinctly PROTRUDING lower jaw
- Upper jaw short and blunt; lower jaw upturned — the split from European whitefish, whose jaws are level or upper-longer
- An adipose fin behind the dorsal, like all whitefish and salmonids
- Large silvery scales that shed easily, and a deeply forked tail
- Back blue-green, flanks bright silver, belly white; no spots
Habits
- A small, open-water whitefish that lives pelagically in dense shoals over deep lake basins
- In Finland it is the muikku — a cultural icon, netted, vendace-roe prized, and fished through the ice all winter
- Spawns in autumn over shallow gravel, gathering in huge, tight shoals
- Feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans, rising toward the surface at dusk
- Highly sensitive to warming and eutrophication — southern populations have thinned sharply
Distribution
Where to find them
- Finland's great lake labyrinths — Saimaa, Päijänne and Pielinen — through the ice and in autumn
- Deep alpine lakes of Bavaria and Austria with whitefish
- North German maräne lakes such as Schaalsee and Plön

How to catch them
Ice jigging over deep basins Lake
Rig: Short ice rod, small mormyshka or jig tipped with a maggot over deep basins, holes drilled near the autumn shoals
Bait/lure: Mormyshka jigs, maggots
Key tip: Use the sounder or the shoal's depth — the fish hang in midwater, not on the bottom, and move fast.
Light trolling and casting to open-water shoals Boat
Rig: Light spinning rod from a boat, tiny spoons and spinners drawn slowly through surface shoals in open water
Bait/lure: Small spoons, tiny spinners
Key tip: Fish at dusk when the shoals rise, and avoid all noise — muikku shoals are boat-shy.
