White Crappie
Pomoxis annularis
The crappie of warm, fertile reservoirs — a schooling, minnow-eating panfish that swarms brush piles each spring from Texas to the Midwest.
Seasons · Peak

Identifying features
- Silvery body with 5-6 faint dark vertical bars
- Only 5-6 spines in the dorsal fin (black crappie have 7-8)
- Deep, thin 'paper-mouth' body shared with black crappie
- Males darken heavily in the spawn — almost black-green
- Look-alike: black crappie wear a random speckled pattern and have 7-8 dorsal spines
Habits
- Schools around brush piles, docks and standing timber, tolerating muddier water than black crappie
- Moves into 1-4 ft of water to spawn on brush and banks in spring
- Feeds on minnows and shad, looking upward — baits must pass above the fish
- Bites best at dawn, dusk and on cloudy days
Distribution
Where to find them
- Brush piles and stake beds on Texas and mid-South reservoir flats
- Dock rows and marina slips in spring
- Creek channels and timber lines in Midwest reservoirs
- Flooded willows and cypress knees in southern oxbows
