Annular Seabream

Diplodus annularis

The smallest of the common Mediterranean Diplodus breams, a small silver fish of harbours, lagoons and seagrass shallows around France, Italy and Spain. The bold black ring at the base of the tail is its unmistakable mark. It bites freely on tiny baits and is often a child's first Mediterranean bream.

Rig: Light float rig with a size 10-12 hook and a pinch of shot, fished beside harbour walls and marina steps

Bait/lure: Pinches of bread paste or tiny shrimp pieces

Key tip: Keep baits thumbnail-small β€” this is a small-mouthed fish and a big bait is ignored.

Light ledgering over seagrass edges Rock fishing

Rig: Feather-light running ledger with a 0.3-0.5 oz weight and size 8-10 hook, cast to the sand edge of seagrass beds
