Saltwater · Winter peak November-March when the flesh is best; year-round on reefs
Asian Sheepshead Wrasse
Semicossyphus reticulatus
The famous hump-headed wrasse of the Jeju and south-coast reefs — 혹돔. Old males carry the unmissable forehead hump and chin bulge — one of the most distinctive profiles in these waters. It cracks urchins and crabs on the reef and is a prized winter opponent from boats and open rocks. The species changes sex as it grows; the largest, humped fish are old males.

Boat fishing over deep reefs Boat
Rig: Strong bottom rig with whole crabs fished from a boat over 60-180 ft reef at Jeju
Bait/lure: Whole crabs or sea urchins
Key tip: Let the fish take the bait and turn, then strike hard — it dives straight for its cave.
Deep rock fishing from shore (winter) Rock fishing
Rig: Heavy bottom rig cast from open-coast rocks into deep water, fished in winter
Bait/lure: Shellfish meat
Key tip: A strong leader is essential — teeth and rock shred weak mono in seconds.
Best baits & lures

- Terminal: Hooks size 3/0 on strong leader, 30-60 g grip sinkers
Recommended gear for this species
Rod · Best value
7'6" medium-heavy jigging rod
≈ US$110-170
Works 2-6 oz jigs over rock and reef and still has the backbone to lift a halibut off the bottom.
Line · Budget
50 lb braid with 40 lb leader (200 yd)
≈ US$25-40
Thin braid cuts the current so jigs stay vertical; the leader shrugs off rock and teeth.
Terminal · Budget
Leadhead jigs, swimbaits and two-hook bottom rigs
≈ US$25-40
A leadhead with a swimbait tail is the universal bottom-fish catcher, from rockfish to cod to flounder.
