Identifying features

  • Long, dark body β€” blackish to dark olive above, only slightly paler below
  • Large scales and a moderately pointed head with a terminal mouth, no barbels
  • Powerful pharyngeal teeth in the throat, built for crushing snails and molluscs
  • Dorsal fin base like a grass carp, but the whole fish is far darker
  • Look-alike: grass carp is olive-green and paler with a blunter head; black carp is distinctly blackish

Habits

  • A mollusc specialist: feeds on snails, mussels and clams along river bottoms
  • Brought to North America for snail control in fish farms; escapes established it in the lower Mississippi basin
  • A listed invasive species in the US β€” wild black carp must not be released; report catches to state agencies
  • One of China's four great farmed carps, prized there as a food fish
