Identifying features

  • Broad, blunt head with a short, wide, slightly upturned mouth and no barbels
  • Short-based dorsal fin set just ahead of the pelvic fins
  • Olive-green to silvery-brown back with a pale belly

Habits

  • A plant eater stocked to control aquatic weeds β€” most feeding is on submerged vegetation
  • Shy and easily spooked; often cruises just under the surface in warm weather
  • In North America it is an invasive species: wild fish reproduce in a few large river systems, including the Lake Erie basin

How to catch them

Float fishing plant baits Lake

Rig: Slip float, 8-12 lb line, size 4-6 hook buried in a ball of vegetation or bread

Bait/lure: Fresh-cut grass, lettuce, sweet corn

Key tip: Chum the swim with chopped vegetation for several days β€” grass carp feed confidently only once a spot feels safe.

Surface freelining Lake

Rig: Free-lined bread crust or soft fruit on a strong size 2 hook, no weight

Bait/lure: Bread crust, cherry tomato, mulberry where legal

Key tip: Cast well ahead of a cruising fish and stay still β€” any shadow or vibration puts them down.
