  • Regular dark blotches in two rows along the flanks β€” the key pattern
  • Dark band running from the eye toward the gill cover
  • Long dorsal and anal fins running most of the body length
  • Smaller and slimmer than the northern snakehead, rarely exceeding about 20 in

Habits

  • Air-breathing ambush predator that holds in weeds, grass and lotus cover
  • Parents guard fry balls in spring and summer β€” adults strike anything near the school
  • Explodes on surface frog lures worked over matted cover
  • Native across South China lowlands, Taiwan and southern Japan's introduced range
  • Feeds mainly at dawn, dusk and on overcast days

How to catch them

Frog-lure surface casting (打黑) Shore

Rig: Medium-heavy rod, weedless soft frog cast onto matted cover and worked back with pauses

Bait/lure: Soft hollow-body frog lures

Key tip: Let the fish take the frog under before striking hard β€” a one-second pause converts far more surface hits.

Live-bait bobber fishing Lake

Rig: Bobber rig with a live small fish or loach set just above weed beds

Bait/lure: Live small fish, live loach

Key tip: Fish tight to cover at dawn; snakeheads rarely chase baits far into open water.
