  • Blunt rounded head with fleshy lips and chin barbel
  • Dark spots sprinkled on the head and front of the body
  • Large mouth with strong teeth; nocturnal cave-dweller by day

Habits

  • Shelters in rock caves and crevices by day, foraging over soft bottoms at night

  • Landings in Chile have declined under heavy artisanal pressure

Distribution

Where to find them

  • Rocky shelf reefs off central Chile ports (Valparaíso, Coquimbo)
  • Rocky bottom at 40-120 m off northern Chile and southern Peru
  • Cave-dotted rocky reefs along the Humboldt coast

Where they live

How to catch them

Artisanal handline over rocky bottom Boat

Rig: Handline or stout rod with 40-60 lb line, 6/0-8/0 hooks on dropper rigs and 8-16 oz sinkers

Bait/lure: Fresh fish strips or squid

Key tip: Chilean artisanal fishers work rocky shelf bottom at 40-120 m; fish close to rock caves at dusk and night when congrios leave their shelters.

Small-scale longline fishing Boat

Rig: Bottom longline with snooded hooks spaced along a weighted mainline

Bait/lure: Sardine or anchovy pieces

Key tip: The main artisanal method in northern Chile for congrio colorado on rocky-shelf grounds; soak sets overnight near reef edges.

Techniques for Red Cusk-eel (Congrio Colorado) →

Baseline setup

  • Rod: Stout boat rod or handline
  • Line: 40-60 lb mono
  • Terminal: 6/0-8/0 hooks, dropper rigs, 8-16 oz sinkers

Recommended gear for this species

Rod · Best value

7'6" medium-heavy jigging rod

≈ US$110-170

Works 2-6 oz jigs over rock and reef and still has the backbone to lift a halibut off the bottom.

Line · Budget

50 lb braid with 40 lb leader (200 yd)

≈ US$25-40

Thin braid cuts the current so jigs stay vertical; the leader shrugs off rock and teeth.

Terminal · Budget

Leadhead jigs, swimbaits and two-hook bottom rigs

≈ US$25-40

A leadhead with a swimbait tail is the universal bottom-fish catcher, from rockfish to cod to flounder.
