Saltwater Β· Spring to fall; most common in summer in shallow water

Clearnose Skate

Rostroraja eglanteria

The common inshore skate of the mid-Atlantic, named for the translucent patch on its snout. Like other skates it lays egg cases β€” the black 'mermaid's purses' that wash up on beaches β€” unlike stingrays, which give live birth. Two relatives without their own pages, the little skate and winter skate, share its range; both lack the clear snout patch. Most anglers meet it as surf bycatch and release it.

Where to find them

  • Carolina nearshore sand bottom from piers and boats

Where they live

How to catch them

Surf bottom fishing (common bycatch) Shore

Rig: Surf rod, standard bottom rig with clam or cut bait on circle hooks, cast beyond the surf breakers

Bait/lure: Clam or cut bait

Key tip: Mostly taken as bycatch while surf fishing β€” handle flat with wet hands, support the disc, and release quickly.

Pier bottom fishing at night Shore

Rig: Medium rod, bottom rig with squid or clam fished from piers after dark over sand

Bait/lure: Squid, clam

Key tip: Night tides over sand produce most pier skates; lift carefully or use a net, as the disc is awkward on a hook alone.
