Common Pandora
Pagellus erythrinus
The pink, deep-bodied sparid of offshore sand and mud, a tier deeper than the inshore Diplodus breams. Common pandora feeds by day over clean ground and is a mainstay of Mediterranean boat bottom fishing from France and Italy to Spain. Rows of blue spots along the upper flanks give it away at a glance.

Drifting bottom fishing over sand and mud Boat
Rig: Two-hook boat rig with a flowing trace and 2-5 oz lead, drifted slowly over sand and mud in 20-60 m
Bait/lure: Squid strips, shrimp or fish pieces
Key tip: Drift in daylight keeping the lead just tripping the bottom; bites come as a steady pull, not a snatch.
Anchored bottom fishing on plateau edges Boat
Rig: Anchored boat rig on the slope of a deep plateau, bait presented right on the sand beside mixed ground
Bait/lure: Shrimp and cuttlefish pieces
Key tip: Anchor on the edge where sand meets mixed ground and chum with finely crushed fish to gather the shoal.
