Chinese Crucian Carp
Carassius auratus
The crucian carp is the fish of Chinese childhoods β a deep-bodied, bronze little carp that taught generations to watch a float. Its feral form is the humble goldfish, found in ponds worldwide. Note for European readers: despite the shared English name, this is the East Asian species β the fish Europeans call crucian carp is its relative Carassius carassius, which has its own page in this guide as the Crucian Carp.

Identifying features
- Deep, laterally compressed body with a high, arched back
- Wild fish are bronze-olive to golden brown β the wild form of the goldfish, not bright orange
- Long dorsal fin and a small, slightly upturned mouth with no barbels
- Scales have dark edges, giving a faint cross-hatch pattern
- Look-alike: common carp grows far larger with barbels and a longer, lower body; pond goldfish are this same species in fancy dress
Habits

- Feeds on the bottom on insect larvae, worms and soft plant matter
- Feral goldfish β the same species β turn up in city ponds and slow rivers around the Great Lakes
- Very hardy: tolerates low oxygen and near-freezing water
Distribution

- Slow canals, ditches and river backwaters
