Dark Sleeper

Odontobutis obscura

A stocky, big-headed sleeper of streams, ponds and backwaters in north-east China (Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning), prized on the table. Locally it shares the name 老头鱼 with Perccottus glenii (葛氏鲈塘鳢), so the two are easily confused — check the separators below.

Identifying features

  • Stocky, cylindrical body with a very large, broad head and big, upturned mouth
  • Mottled dark brown patterning with irregular darker blotches
  • Two separate dorsal fins — the first spiny, the second soft — and a rounded tail
  • Eyes set high on the head; thick, fleshy lips
  • Separator from Perccottus glenii (also called 老头鱼): the dark sleeper is the larger, heavier-headed Odontobutis of cleaner streams, while Perccottus is the smaller fish of still, weedy swamp water — when in doubt, note the water and the bigger, broader head

Habits

  • A bottom ambush fish — lies motionless among stones, roots and weed and darts at passing prey
  • Feeds on small fish, shrimp and insect larvae, most actively toward dusk
  • Males guard eggs laid under stones and in cavities in late spring and summer
  • Tolerates cold and low oxygen better than most stream fish, and slows down greatly in winter
