How to catch them

Small spinner and soft-bait lure fishing Lake

Rig: Light spinning rod, small spinners, 1-2 in soft plastics on light jig heads worked along weed edges

Bait/lure: Small spinners, soft plastics

Key tip: Keep moving until a school is found — perch are competitive and one fish usually means many.

Ice jigging Lake

Rig: Short ice rod, small jig or spoon tipped with maggots or a fish eye, jigged over wintering holes

Bait/lure: Ice jigs, maggots

Key tip: Drill several holes along a drop-off and fish each briefly; perch schools roam and reward mobile anglers.

River and canal dropshot River

Rig: Light spinning rod, dropshot or small jig worked along canal walls, lock gates and river margins

Bait/lure: Small soft plastics, worms

Key tip: Perch patrol canal walls and bridge shadows; cast tight to the wall and work the lure back along it.
