Gray Triggerfish
Balistes capriscus
A tough-skinned reef fish prized for its firm white fillets despite being a champion bait stealer. Its first dorsal spine locks upright β the 'trigger' mechanism. Name caution: in Florida the unrelated leatherjacket (Oligoplites) is sometimes called by overlapping local names, so check the fish, not the nickname.

Identifying features
- Tough, leathery gray skin with rough scales β very hard to cut
- First dorsal spine locks upright and folds only when the small second 'trigger' spine is pressed
- Small mouth with strong beak-like teeth for crushing shellfish
- Second dorsal and anal fins are mirror images, giving a slow, hovering swim
- Plain gray to mottled brown-gray, with no bright markings
Habits
- Hovers over reefs and wrecks, often in loose groups
- Feeds on sea urchins, crabs, shrimp and mollusks it crushes or blows out of the sand
- Expert bait stealer β pecks large baits apart without taking the hook
- Males build and guard bottom nests in summer while females lay eggs
- Fights hard and dives for structure when hooked
Distribution
Where to find them
- Atlantic reefs and wrecks off Florida's east coast
- Gulf wrecks and artificial reefs off the Panhandle, Louisiana and Texas
- Carolina offshore wrecks and live bottom

How to catch them
Small hooks over reefs and wrecks Boat
Rig: Bottom rig with small strong hooks (size 1-2/0) baited with thumbnail-sized squid or shrimp pieces, dropped tight to reefs and wrecks
Bait/lure: Squid pieces, shrimp pieces
Key tip: Use small baits and set the hook at the first peck β triggers shred big baits without ever taking the hook.
Two-hook bottom rigs around structure Boat
Rig: Two-hook bottom rig with tiny strong hooks and just enough weight to hold over rock piles and artificial reefs
Bait/lure: Squid, shrimp, crab pieces
Key tip: Keep the rig vertical and close to structure; if you drift off the reef the bites stop.
