Identifying features

  • Torpedo-shaped, silvery-olive river carp with large, dark-edged scales
  • Two pairs of barbels; the snout is blunt and the mouth points slightly down
  • The last simple ray of the dorsal fin is smooth, not serrated — a key point in this genus
  • Fins often flushed orange-red in stream fish, especially in the breeding season
  • Adults are deeper-bodied than juveniles, which are slimmer and brighter silver

Habits

  • Lives in fast, clear streams of the Pearl, Han and Min systems and in Taiwan's rivers
  • Feeds on algae, plant matter, snails and insect larvae taken in the current
  • Holds behind boulders and in pool tails, moving into runs to feed at dawn and dusk
  • A famously strong fighter that uses the current and dives for rock cover when hooked
  • Spawns in early summer, moving into faster, gravelly reaches

How to catch them

Ledgering corn in fast current River

Rig: Running or fixed lead heavy enough to hold on the stream bed, strong size 6-8 hook on a short hooklink

Bait/lure: Sweet corn, dough-wrapped corn

Key tip: Cast into the seam beside the main flow, keep the line tight and strike at the first firm pull.

Float fishing live bait in stream pools River

Rig: Stream float rig with shot spread to drift the bait naturally through the pool

Bait/lure: Live shrimp or earthworm

Key tip: Trot the float down the pool tail at dawn; barbel take confidently before the sun hits the water.
