Taiwan Torrent Carp

Acrossocheilus paradoxus

A barred Acrossocheilus of Taiwan's mountain streams — and the same species behind a locality record from Leishan, Guizhou, in FishBase, where it is listed under the name 台湾光唇鱼. Despite the Chinese name 台湾石鲽, it is NOT a flatfish or flounder at all: it is a cyprinid, a member of the carp family, built for life over rocks in fast, clear water.

Identifying features

  • A carp-family fish — deep-ish, laterally compressed body with a forked tail, NOT a flatfish: both eyes are on opposite sides of a normal, upright head
  • Bold dark vertical bars on a golden-olive body, strongest in juveniles and stream fish
  • Two pairs of short barbels at the mouth corners, the clearest proof it is a cyprinid barbel, not a flounder
  • Thick lips and a slightly underslung mouth for grazing stones in current
  • Dorsal fin tall and dark-edged; breeding males colour up and develop tubercles

Habits

  • Lives in clear, fast mountain streams in Taiwan, holding over rock and gravel
  • Grazes algae and picks small invertebrates from stones between riffles and pools
  • Males guard eggs in the breeding season, like other Acrossocheilus
  • The Leishan, Guizhou record shows the species (or its listing) reaches mainland mountain streams under the name 台湾光唇鱼

How to catch them

Stream small-hook bottom fishing River

Rig: Short light rod, tiny split shot and size 12-16 hook resting among rocks

Bait/lure: Small worm pieces and tiny shrimp

Key tip: Keep the bait down in the pockets behind boulders; torrent fish dart out, take and return fast.

Light float drift, Acrossocheilus style River

Rig: Fine float rig drifted through runs and pool tails, as for banded barbel

Bait/lure: Insect larvae and small dough baits

Key tip: Drift naturally with the current and strike at the first dip — these fish mouth baits quickly.

Long enough to lob heavy bait rigs, strong enough to move a flathead off the bottom.

Reel · Budget

Baitcasting or 4000-6000 spinning reel

≈ US$60-100

Line capacity and drag for long runs — catfish and carp both make them.

Terminal · Budget
