Freshwater Β· Spring and autumn; an emerging fly-fishing target

Iberian Barbel

Luciobarbus comizo

⚠ IUCN Vulnerable. An Iberian endemic of the Ebro and other Spanish rivers; note that several close Luciobarbus relatives share its rivers. How to catch them

Sight fly-fishing in clear summer water River

Rig: Fly rod 6-7 wt with a nymph, small streamer or dry fly presented on sight to feeding fish in clear runs and glides

Bait/lure: Nymphs, small streamers and dry flies

Key tip: Approach slowly and cast accurately β€” sight-fished comizo are wary; a clean first presentation counts more than fly changes.

Light ledgering in runs and glides River

Rig: Medium river rod with a running lead and a strong small hook, fished with bread paste, pellets or small boilies in runs and weir pools

Bait/lure: Bread paste, pellets and small boilies

Key tip: Feed lightly and fish patiently close to bank lines; bites develop slowly, strike on a positive pull.
