Jolthead Porgy

Calamus bajonado

The largest porgy in the Atlantic US, built around a blunt, steep 'jolthead' and molar teeth made for crushing shellfish. Silvery with brassy spots, it is a wary reef fish that rewards light leaders and natural baits around Florida patch reefs.

How to catch them

Shellfish baits over patch reefs Boat

Rig: Light bottom rig or knocker rig with a small circle hook, fished on patch reefs and hard bottom in 30-150 ft (9-46 m)

Bait/lure: Crab, shrimp and conch pieces

Key tip: Use just enough weight to hold bottom and let the bait sit still β€” joltheads inspect baits before committing.

Light-leader reef bottom fishing Boat

Rig: Small bottom rig with a long, light fluorocarbon leader and a small hook around reef edges

Bait/lure: Shrimp and small crab pieces

Key tip: These fish are wary β€” drop to a lighter leader and smaller hook if bites are tentative.

Techniques for Jolthead Porgy β†’

Baseline setup

  • Rod: Medium-light to medium 7 ft boat rod
  • Line: 20-40 lb braid with a light fluorocarbon leader
  • Terminal: Knocker rigs, small circle hooks, egg sinkers

Recommended gear for this species

Rod Β· Best value

7'6" medium-heavy jigging rod

β‰ˆ US$110-170

Works 2-6 oz jigs over rock and reef and still has the backbone to lift a halibut off the bottom.

Line Β· Budget

50 lb braid with 40 lb leader (200 yd)

β‰ˆ US$25-40

Thin braid cuts the current so jigs stay vertical; the leader shrugs off rock and teeth.

Terminal Β· Budget

Leadhead jigs, swimbaits and two-hook bottom rigs

β‰ˆ US$25-40

A leadhead with a swimbait tail is the universal bottom-fish catcher, from rockfish to cod to flounder.
