Freshwater · April-October; males in spawning colours in spring
Korean Pale Chub
Zacco koreanus
Korea's endemic Zacco — the clear, cool-water 참갈겨니 of foothill streams. It hovers over gravel in clean hill creeks and is the closest cousin of the continental lowland pale chub. Delicate maggot fishing on a summer day. Like all small native species it rewards attention to detail: the species was only recently formally described.

Bait/lure: Maggot or tiny bread ball
Key tip: Fish in daylight — they sight-feed; strike at the first touch, as they spit tiny hooks fast.
Micro-spinning in stream pools River
Rig: Tiny spinner or dry fly worked slowly through pool tails and shallow runs
Bait/lure: Micro fly or tiny spinner
Key tip: Work along pool edges; spawning dress in spring shows the biggest males.
