Lake Chub

Couesius plumbeus

A hardy minnow of upland streams and northern lakes across Alberta, the Prairies and the North. It is a micro-fishing and creek-side fish that kids actually catch β€” note it is an upper-waters fish and is absent from the lower Fraser.

How to catch them

Creek micro fishing River

Rig: Ultralight rod, tiny float or split shot and a size 16-18 hook with a worm bit, in creek pools

Bait/lure: Worm bits

Key tip: Fish the quiet pool tails β€” lake chub hold where the riffle slows.

Small fly and nymph fishing River

Rig: Light fly rod or spinning rod with a small nymph drifted through upland pools

Bait/lure: Small nymphs, flies
