Ling

Molva molva

THREE-WAY NAME TRAP: this ling is a true cod-family fish of deep Atlantic wrecks and Norwegian fjords β€” it is NOT the New Zealand ling (Genypterus blacodes, a cusk-eel) and NOT the Pacific lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus, a greenling). Always check the Latin name Molva molva. Lange in Norwegian.

Where they live

Deep offshore wrecks in 200-650 ft (60-200 m)Rocky slopes and fjord deeps of Norway and ScotlandDeep reef edges and rough ground

How to catch them

Deep wreck fishing with big baits Boat

Rig: Heavy boat rod with a strong paternoster rig, a whole mackerel or large squid presented hard on the bottom beside a deep wreck

Bait/lure: Whole mackerel, herring, squid

Key tip: Keep the bait pinned down and give bites time β€” ling engulf big baits slowly.

Drifting rough ground and fjord slopes Boat

Rig: Strong flowing rig drifted over rocky slopes and fjord deeps with heavy leads to hold bottom contact

Bait/lure: Fish strips, squid, pouting

Key tip: Drift slowly along the slope edge β€” ling hold the line where rock meets sand.
