Freshwater Β· Best in spring and early summer; April to July in Ozark streams

Neosho Bass

Micropterus velox

A stream bass of the Ozark highlands, long treated as a subspecies of smallmouth bass and now recognised as its own species. It lives in the clear, rocky streams of the Neosho and Arkansas river basins in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Identification versus smallmouth bass is genuinely subtle β€” where you caught it is the best clue, since outside its Ozark range a 'Neosho' is almost certainly a smallmouth.

Identifying features

  • Bronze-green bass build nearly identical to a smallmouth β€” range is the best clue
  • Found only in Ozark highland streams of the Neosho/Arkansas basin
  • Faint vertical barring on the sides, plainer than a typical smallmouth's
  • Jaw not extending past the eye, with small scales on the cheek
  • Red to orange eye and reddish fins, especially in the breeding season

Habits

  • Holds in rocky pools and current seams like a stream smallmouth
  • Feeds heavily on crayfish, plus minnows and stream insects
  • Spawns in late spring on gravel nests in quiet pool tails
  • Most at home in clear, cool, flowing water β€” rarely in lakes
  • Often shares streams with true smallmouth bass, and hybrids occur

How to catch them

Small lures and flies in Ozark streams Shore

Rig: Light spinning or fly tackle waded in clear streams, casting small jigs, spinners or streamers to pools and current seams β€” it behaves like a stream smallmouth

Bait/lure: Small soft plastics, streamers

Key tip: Wade quietly and cast tight to boulders and ledges; clear Ozark water makes these fish wary.

Crawfish imitations around boulders River

Rig: Texas-rigged or jig-head crawfish plastic hopped slowly along rocky bottoms and bluff ledges

Bait/lure: Crawfish soft plastics

Key tip: Crayfish are the main food β€” fish the craw slowly through the deepest part of each pool.
